The Java programming language is used by countless developers to create all sorts of applications, games or web contents. If you wish to have access to such contents, you need to have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your Mac. It is distributed completely free of charge and it takes about a minute to install it and you won't encounter any kind of difficulties along the way.

Although the Java Runtime Environment can't be installed like a standard Mac OS X app, the operation is quite simple. A wizard will guide you with step-by-step instructions, but there is really nothing much to explain. All you have to do is click a button to proceed to the next stages and wait until the installation process is finished.

Simply put, the Java Runtime Environment is a framework that enables your machine to run Java-based applications. You won't notice anything different after installing it on your Mac. However, you will notice it kicking in when accessing Java-developed contents on your web browser or when running a .jar file.

Pros

It takes a minute to install the Java Runtime Environment. It enables your Mac to run Java-based applications. The framework doesn't use too many resources and it can be installed on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and Solaris.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. The Java Runtime Environment gives you access to a new kind of applications, games and web contents.
